Fox is prepping a new series based on the childhood playground game of tag as part of its 2019-2020 programming slate.
Football superstars and brothers JJ, TJ and Derek Watt host the new physical competition series Ultimate Tag from Znak & Co., and Fox Alternative Entertainment, Fox’s newly launched in-house unscripted prodco.
Ultimate Tag will premiere in 2020 on Fox.
During a Fox programming conference call, Rob Wade, president, alternative entertainment and specials at Fox Entertainment, said that Ultimate Tag fits in the network’s unscripted strategy as it’s a “broad show” with “a lot of co-viewing potential.”
“Obviously, I was looking at the acquisition of WWE and some of the sports programming we have,” said Wade. “I certainly feel that this show [Ultimate Tag] fits more closely with the WWE audience…It’s a real opportunity for families to sit around the TV and watch that.”
WWE’s flagship program, WWE’S Smackdown Live will make its debut on Fox this coming October. Last year, Fox Sports inked a five-year deal with WWE for the two-hour weekly program that will air year-round on Fox.
Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier added that Ultimate Tag is another example of live and look-live programming. He noted that the shiny floor entertainment series The Masked Singer had done well on the network. The premiere episode of The Masked Singer this past January averaged 9.4 million viewers, becoming the highest-rated unscripted debut on any network since The X Factor launched on Fox in 2011.
Additionally, season three of The Masked Singer will premiere immediately following Super Bowl LIV on Feb. 2 and will make its time period premiere on Feb. 4 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Fox.
Fox’s slate of unscripted series for 2019-2020 also includes Beat Shazam, First Responders Live, Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours To Hell and Back, Hell’s Kitchen, MasterChef, MasterChef Junior, Paradise Hotel, So You Think You Can Dance, and Spin The Wheel.
Fox plans to announce additional new unscripted series for 2019-2020 soon.
