Showtime-owned Smithsonian Channel has ordered a new series about Britain’s most mysterious sites, blending humor and the supernatural.

The 10-part Mystic Britain is hosted by TV and radio presenter Clive Anderson and anthropologist Mary-Ann Ochota, who explore ancient places and rituals, investigating the strange and sacred beliefs of Britain’s past with the help of scientists, archaeologists and historians.

In the first episode, “Witches and Demons,” visit the ancient Church of St. Mary’s Troston, where 600 years ago, people believed demons walked the earth to do the Devil’s bidding.

The series is produced by Blink Films for Smithsonian Networks. Dan Gold is the series producer, with Andra Heritage and Dan Chambers executive producing for Blink. John Cavanagh, Charles Poe and David Royle executive produce for Smithsonian Channel.

Mystic Britain premieres Aug. 5 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Smithsonian Channel.
