American cable network Discovery Channel has set a mid-October premiere date for Why We Hate, the six-part docuseries from filmmaking heavyweights Steven Spielberg and Alex Gibney.
Produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Television and Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions, the previously announced series draws on cutting-edge journalism, deep historical investigations and research in psychology, biology and neuroscience to trace the evolutionary basis of hatred and its impact throughout human history.
Experts called on in each episode include cognitive scientist Laurie Santos, evolutionary anthropologist Brian Hare, journalist and author Jelani Cobb, extremism expert Sasha Havlicek, international criminal lawyer Patricia Viseur Sellers and neuroscientist Emile Burneau.
“Getting to the root of the human condition is something not only fascinating, but necessary in understanding who we are,” Spielberg and Gibney said in a joint statement. “This is not a series that just documents something that’s happening; it’s an inquiry – an attempt to understand why we hate, through the science, and through an understanding of our common humanity.”
The series works to contextualize everyday instances of hate, such as violent rivalries at sports matches, hateful rhetoric on social media and heated disagreements over political partisanship, race, religion and social beliefs.
It will also highlight personal stories of those who “have lived a life of hatred” and those who seek to quell violent conflict.
Discovery will broadcast Why We Hate on Oct. 13 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, with additional episodes airing each subsequent Sunday. The first episode will be available on Discovery’s TV streaming service Discovery Go on Oct. 6.
The docuseries is produced in association with indie Escape Artists, and is directed by Emmy award-winning Geeta Gandbhir and Sam Pollard. Executive producers include Gibney, Spielberg, Frank Marshall, Stacey Offman, Richard Perello, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, David McKillop, Jon Bardin, Yael Melamede, and Erica Sashin.
