Discovery-owned Food Network has greenlit a six-episode reboot of Food Network Challenge, to be hosted by American actor Ian Ziering (Beverly Hills 90210, pictured), nearly a decade after the original series’ final episode.
The updated competition show pits top cake makers, bakers and sugar artists against each other in two rounds of themed battles to create “mind-blowing” edible works of art for special events in the hopes of winning a US$10,000 prize.
Food Network Challenge premieres on Dec. 23 with a theme centered around the holiday film A Christmas Story theme. Other episode themes include Back to the Future, Pokémon, Monopoly and The Wizard of Oz.
The original series ran for six years beginning in 2005, with the last original episode airing in 2011.
“Food Network Challenge gives viewers a front row seat to the real-life phenomenon that is the world of elite competitive baking,” Courtney White, president of Food Network, said in a statement. “The artists competing range from a 19-year-old cake wunderkind who started competing at age 14 to a seasoned cake maker who has been waiting eight years to come to Challenge for a rematch.”
