British commercial network ITV has commissioned London-based indie Spun Gold TV to produce a shiny floor entertainment format that will pit previous contestants of various television game shows in head-to-head competition.
Quizmaster will serve as a 90-minute special that will feature 15 previous contestants of major quiz shows competing to become the ultimate Quizmaster. Hosted by Jeremy Vine, the competitors will battle it out through 15 rounds, each designed to test their quiz knowledge, catch out other contestants or beat the clock.
The least knowledgeable contestants will be eliminated each round, with the two left standing meeting in a climactic final.
Quizmaster will consist of past contestants of such programs as Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, Mastermind, The Chase, Fifteen to One and University Challenge.
The format is produced by Colin Farquhar, with Richard van’t Riet as director and Sue Allison as executive producer. ITV’s Sue Murphy and Kate Teckman commissioned the one-off, which is being distributed internationally by All3Media International.
“How clever do you have to be to win a million on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Cleverer than a Mastermind champion? Or are the students on University Challenge the brainiest?” Vine asked in a statement. “Well we decided to find out. And you could have cut the tension in the studio with a knife. This quiz is a Christmas monster.”
“We Brits love a quiz show – from the intellectual rigours of Mastermind to the high drama and life-changing moments of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, we are a nation of quiz addicts,” Daniela Neumann, MD of Spun Gold added. “But we’ve never seen the contestants of these shows competing against each other. Quizmaster will answer the ultimate question all fans want to know — who is the cleverest of them all?”
