Audiences at the 10th annual DOC NYC documentary film festival have selected I Am Not Alone as the Audience Award winner, voted in from among all new features at the fest.
I Am Not Alone (pictured) is directed by Garin Hovannisian and follows former Armenian political prisoner turned Member of Parliament Nikol Pashinyan as he leads a peaceful protest to transform his country in 2018.
Along with recognition from the festival audience, the film receives an FX9 full-frame camera, courtesy of Sony, as well as a screening as part of the IFC Center’s Pure Non-fiction screening series in 2020.
Meanwhile, DOC NYC revealed the winner of the Kanopy DOC NYC U Award celebrating short films by student filmmakers: Kostya, directed by Oxana Inipko from New York’s School of Visual Arts. The award comes with a US$500 cash prize.
This year’s edition of DOC NYC ran Nov. 6-15 at the IFC Center, the SVA Theatre and Cinépolis Chelsea, and included a record 318 features, shorts and panels — including 28 world premieres and 27 U.S. or North American premieres — chosen from more than 2,200 submissions.
