U.S. pubcaster PBS will be the American home to Expedition with Steve Backshall starting in the new year.
The series follows adventurer Steve Backshall (pictured), his team of world-class experts and his film crew as they venture into undiscovered worlds. Backshall and his adventure experts – including cave divers, kayakers and mountaineers – use teamwork to achieve a series of world firsts, including the first descent of a white-water river in the Himalayas, trekking through unexplored jungle in South America and climbing mountains in the deserts of the Middle East.
The series is produced by True to Nature and distributed by FremantleMedia International for PBS. Bill Margol is executive in charge for PBS. The series is executive produced by Wendy Darke. It was commissioned by BBC and UKTV, with funding for the PBS presentation provided by public television viewers.
To date, Fremantle has sold the series into over 140 territories worldwide.
“Expedition with Steve Backshall takes viewers to incredible parts of our planet where humans have never ventured before,” said Lisa Honig, senior EVP of distribution for North America, and international at Fremantle, in a statement. “Steve and his expert team travel to the furthest corners of the world, making eye-opening discoveries which will be sure to capture audiences across America on PBS. We’re looking forward to seeing the series launch in the USA in January 2020.”
“In Expedition with Steve Backshall, PBS gives a glimpse into some of the incredible parts of the world that have yet to be explored,” added Margol, senior director of general audience programming and development for PBS. “The world is full of surprising discoveries and journeys to be made, and we hope to spark viewers’ curiosity and ignite their spirit of adventure.”
