Jana Bennett, whose multi-decade career in television has encompassed leadership roles with the BBC and American cable nets History and TLC, has revealed that she is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor.
In an interview with the UK’s Evening Standard, Bennett said that she has been diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), and is working with British strategic communications consultant Jessica Morris as part of OurBrainBank, “an innovative, patient-led movement designed to move glioblastoma from terminal to treatable, powered by patients.” Bennett is a trustee with the organization.
In the interview, Bennett says she was diagnosed earlier this year and that treatment for the tumor has been going well.
“Although standards and approaches to treatment can vary by country, research doesn’t recognize borders,” Bennett told the Evening Standard, regarding OurBrainBank and its free app, designed to both help those dealing with GBM, and share data with those treating the disease. “It is only logical to share data to help others, which is part of the patient-centered idea behind OurBrainBank.”
An experienced industry executive, Bennett joined A+E Networks in June 2013 and oversaw the rebranding of lifestyle network FYI and the reinvention of the LMN brand. She was named to president and GM of History in September 2015 and was responsible for managing all strategic planning, programming, marketing and brand development for History and H2.
Prior to joining A+E Networks, Bennett was president of BBC Worldwide Networks and Global BBC iPlayer. During her role at BBC Worldwide, she was responsible for 16 branded channels, across 100 countries, reaching 380 million subscriber homes. Before that, she headed up BBC Television and was responsible for the BBC’s six free-to-air channels in the UK, overseeing such series launches as Planet Earth, Top Gear, Walking with the Dinosaurs and Strictly Come Dancing.
Additionally, Bennett previously held the position of EVP and GM of TLC Network and Discovery Pictures.
Most recently, Bennett boarded digital magazine OZY Media as executive-at-large and senor adviser to help drive development of the multi-platform company’s original productions.
