Discovery-owned true crime and mystery network Investigation Discovery is to probe the meteoric rise and infamous fall of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez in the latest installment of the net’s ‘Murder Mystery’ franchise.

Aaron Hernandez: An ID Murder Mystery will delve into the psyche of Hernandez, whose career came to an abrupt end following his first-degree murder conviction for the killing of semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd. Knoxville-headquartered non-scripted prodco Jupiter Entertainment produces the film.

The three-part special will take viewers beyond the glitzy headlines to reveal Hernandez’s involvement in three separate murder investigations while also taking a closer look at the motivations behind each killing and examining the devastation left in his wake. Aaron Hernandez: An ID Murder Mystery will also dig into investigations surrounding the double homicides of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, and the alleged shooting of Alexander Bradley.

The documentary special will additionally feature never-before-heard details and intimate interviews with those closest to the late Hernandez, including the footballer’s childhood friend, Dennis Sanscoucie.

“The case of Aaron Hernandez is, perhaps, one of the most stunning and perplexing criminal stories of this century,” said Henry S. Schleiff, group president of ID, Travel Channel, American Heroes Channel and Destination America. “Hernandez was in all ways, America’s golden boy, but this tragic case proves that no amount of money or fame can hide the true nature of a person.”

Aaron Hernandez: An ID Murder Mystery premieres Jan. 20 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Investigation Discovery.

The three-parter is executive produced by Jupiter’s Allison Wallach and Tim McConville. For ID, Pamela Deutsch is senior executive producer, Sara Kozak is SVP of production and Kevin Bennett is GM.
