BBC America, the joint venture of AMC Networks and BBC Studios, has slated two natural history programs for 2020 during its presentation at the Television Critics Association winter press tour Thursday (Jan. 16).

The documentary She Walks with Apes (pictured), narrated by actress Sandra Oh, is the story of three women — Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, Biruté Galdikas — who embarked on lifelong journeys to live with Great Apes.

She Walks with Apes will be “at the heart” of the network’s celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, premiering April 22 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The film from Caitlin and Mark Starowicz previously aired on Canadian pubcaster CBC’s documentary strand ‘The Nature of Things’ as Trimates and was a Realscreen MIPCOM Pick for 2019 It is executive produced by Mark and George Flak, and produced by Grand Passage Media.

CBC & Radio-Canada Distribution are handling international distribution.

Headed to BBC America next year, Meerkat Manor: Rise of the Dynasty (w/t) is a new installment in the Meerkat Manor series.

A co-production with Oxford Scientific Films, the series tells a tale of survival revolving around three families who are descendants of “meerkat matriarch,” Flower, in South Africa’s Kalahari Desert.

The 13 x 30-minute episodes will premiere in 2021. The series is distributed worldwide by Endemol Shine International Distribution.

“Both of these additions to BBC America’s best-in-class nature lineup are outstanding,” Sarah Barnett, president of AMC Networks Entertainment Group and AMC Studios, said in a statement. “Funny, engaging, profoundly moving and most of all joyful, nature programming is embraced by our audiences and we are delighted to keep fueling passion for our planet and the natural world we’re all part of.”
