Bronson Park Films, SMA Creative take rights to The Pitch That Killed

Los Angeles-based Bronson Park Films and SMA Creative have acquired the documentary rights to Mike Sowell’s book The Pitch That Killed.

The book explores the 1920′s baseball season’s three-way pennant race between the Cleveland Indians, Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees, offering a look at such characters as Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Shoeless Joe Jackson and Tris Speaker.

That year, Indians shortstop Ray Chapman died after he was hit by a pitch thrown by the Yankees’ Carl Mays. Chapman is the only major league baseball player in history to die of an injury suffered in a game.

“August 17th marked the 100th anniversary date of Chapman’s death,” SMA Creative’s Danielle Alberico said in a statement. “That fatal pitch changed baseball history. Thanks to Pam Sullivan of Come Aboard Productions who brought us the material and Mike’s one of a kind book, Art and I have access to a treasure trove of archival material.”

Bronson Park Films president Art Horan will serve as producer with Alberico. Pam Sullivan is co-producer.

A director has not yet been engaged.

Horan’s previous credits include The Usual Suspects, Ring Girls, Hands of God and the forthcoming documentary feature #Unfit: The Psychology of Donald Trump.
