Having acquired the duo’s Sundance doc On the Record earlier this year, WarnerMedia streamer HBO Max has greenlit a limited docuseries from directors Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick set to explore the beauty industry.

Billed as a “comprehensive large-scale investigative expose” of the cosmetics, beauty and personal care industry, Not So Pretty will air across four half-hour episodes.

The docuseries will be produced by eOne, and helmed and exec produced by Dick and Ziering. EOne’s president of global unscripted TV, Tara Long, will also exec produce.

Currently in production, the docuseries will look at what the filmmakers term as “lurking dangers” hiding within the products and commodities used by millions for skin care, make up, nails and hair care, while also exploring safer alternatives.

Not So Pretty is a landmark exposé that will both captivate and educate viewers,” said Jennifer O’Connell, executive vice president original non-fiction and kids programming, HBO Max, in a statement. “Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering are masters of investigative storytelling and prime to reveal the unknown threats that affect us all. This series gives us the opportunity to spark change and arm consumers with the knowledge needed to make smarter personal care choices.”
