Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed’s My Octopus Teacher for Netflix and Jens Monath’s Anthropocene: The Rise of Humans from ZDF Enterprises are among the winners for the 2020 Silbersalz Science & Media Awards.

The international awards — in cooperation with Jackson Wild — celebrate films for “excellence in science storytelling” and their potential to inspire global audiences to explore STEM topics. The awards serve as part of the Halle, Germany-set Silbersalz Festival, which this year runs from Oct. 14 to 18.

Winners were revealed during the Silbersalz Science Media Award show, which was broadcast online on Thursday (Oct. 15).

My Octopus Teacher (pictured) from the Sea Change Project and Off the Fence was the big winner on the night, taking home the Inspiring Change and Young Audience awards. The 85-minute documentary charts diver Craig Foster, who also produced the film, as he swims every day over the course of one year with a wild octopus that lives in a kelp forest off the coast of South Africa.

James Byrne’s Our Gorongosa from Gorongosa Media & HHMI Tangled Bank Studios received an honorable mention for the Inspiring Change Award.

Anthropocene: The Rise of Humans, meanwhile, was presented the Best International Factual Series and the Homeland Earth Audience Award. Produced by ZDF and Terra-X in Germany, the 3 x 50-minute series explores how humans have transformed the planet that sustains us.
