ViacomCBS-owned Smithsonian Channel and Terra Mater Studios in Austria have commissioned UK-based Big Wave to produce a 60-minute wildlife special.

Presented by British actor Hugh Bonneville, New Forest: The Crown’s Hunting Ground (w/t) ventures to the New Forest National Park, a royal park in Southern England, home to ancient woods, mossy mires and rich heathlands.

The special is slated to premiere in summer 2021.

New Forest: The Crown’s Hunting Ground (w/t) is executive produced by Sarah Cunliffe for Big Wave, Tria Thalman for Smithsonian, and Sabine Holzer for Terra Mater.

Emma Ross is series producer.

“So much wildlife programming is filmed abroad, but some of the most enchanting scenes in the natural world can be found closer to home,” David Royle, chief programming officer at Smithsonian Channel, said in a statement. “The New Forest is a special place and few people know it more intimately than cinematographer James Aldred.”

Big Wave has previously produced Wicked Sharks for Discovery, New Forest: A Year in the Wild Wood for BBC and Cannibal Sharks for National Geographic, among others.
