Ahead of its world premiere at the 2020 DOC NYC Film Festival, Realscreen is sharing an exclusive clip of Christi Cooper’s Youth v. Gov, a film documenting America’s youth taking on the world’s most powerful government.
The 110-minute film examines a landmark lawsuit brought forth by 21 American youth who are suing the U.S. government for “willfully acting in creating our climate crisis” over the past six decades, thereby endangering their futures. The film chronicles the turbulent legal battle as the defendants endeavor to get the case dismissed.
“Youth v. Gov is not another warning film about the catastrophe of climate change,” Cooper tells Realscreen. “Rather, it’s about the root cause of the crisis, government responsibility, the power of the youth voice to hold their government accountable, our constitutional rights, and the importance of citizen democracy.
“This film highlights the government’s active role in creating the climate crisis over 60 years and its responsibility in protecting its most vulnerable citizens. This film also sheds light on how our judicial system works and what its role should be in addressing the climate crisis,” she adds. “The climate crisis is affecting everyone, everywhere, but as we know, those most affected are the vulnerable among us. It’s important for viewers to see this reality at the heart of our democracy, and to also see how youth of all backgrounds are standing up to fight for their rights, and their future.”
The film is presented and produced by Vulcan Productions and Barrelmaker Productions.
It is produced by Cooper and Olivia Ahnemann, alongside coproducers Liz Smith and Dennis Aig. Executive producers are Jody Allen, Ruth Johnston, Rocky Collins, Jannat Gargi, David J. Cornfield, Linda A. Cornfield, Heather Smith and Tiffany Schauer.
Cooper has previously been awarded documentary funding grants from the Redford Center Grants Program and the SFFILM Environmental Fellowship.
Youth v Gov will have its digital world premiere at DOC NYC starting from tomorrow (Nov. 11) until Nov. 19.
