Robert L. Johnson joins Discovery, Inc. board

Robert L. Johnson, founder and former chairman of BET, is joining Discovery, Inc.’s board of directors, effective Jan. 1.

Johnson (pictured) is also the founder and chairman of The RLJ Companies, which owns or holds interests in businesses operating in hotel real estate, private equity, 401k fintech services, automobile dealerships, content streaming, gaming and sports betting.

S. Decker Anstrom, who has served on the board since 2012 as a preferred stock director, will step down effective Dec. 31, 2020.

Susan M. Swain, a current common stock director on the Discovery board, will assume Anstrom’s role as a preferred stock director.

TVF Int’l, Attitude Pictures strike first-look deal

London-headquartered indie factual distributor TVF International has signed a first-look deal with Attitude Pictures, an Auckland prodco focused on challenging perceptions of disability on screens and behind the camera.

TVF International already represents more than 100 hours from Attitude Pictures and the new agreement will give the distributor a first option on all new Attitude productions, as well as Attitude’s back catalog of films.

Titles include Against the Odds (28 x 30 minutes), Diabetes: The Disease That’s Killing My Family (5 x 29 minutes), An Ordinary Life (8 x 50 minutes), My Perfect Family (29 x 29 minutes), Being Me (36 x 29 minutes), The She Lift Story (1 x 48 minutes), In My Mind (19 x 29 minutes), Bulletproof (12 x 30 minutes) and Miss Amazing (1 x 48 minutes).

All programs are broadcast on TVNZ.

Fugitive takes int’l rights to Channel 4 titles

London-based content company Fugitive has picked up two factual programs that premiered on UK pubcaster Channel 4 in 2020.

The company acquired the international rights for Bright Button Productions’ Prue Leith: Journey with My Daughter (1 x 60 minutes) and Pulse Film’s Hair Power: Me and My Afro (1 x 60 minutes).

Fugitive has secured an initial sale for Prue Leith: Journey with My Daughter, licensing the title to RTHK, the public service broadcaster in Hong Kong.

Silverlining secures duo of royal docs

Bristol-based sales house Silverlining has secured the rights to a pair of documentaries with royal subjects: Prince William: Making of a Monarch and The Rise and Fall of the Spanish King.

Both films were produced by Spun Gold TV for the SVOD True Royalty. The duet of titles will join documentaries on Princess Diana, the Queen, Prince Albert and King George VI on the Silverlining slate.

“2021 is going to be a big year for royal programming and these will feature prominently in our Spring catalog,” Silverlining MD Bethan Corney said in a statement.
