Surf’s up at HBO with the announcement of 100 Foot Wave, a six-part sports doc series from filmmaker Chris Smith and executive producer Joe Lewis.
The series follows the decade-long journey of world class surfer Garrett McNamara on his quest to surf a 100-foot wave. The odyssey takes McNamara, his wife Nicole and fellow surfers to the seaside village of Nazaré, Portugal, where locals have for centuries been in awe of the dangerous waters off their coast.
Over the course of the six episodes, 100 Foot Wave weaves together the story of the seaside village that is transformed by McNamara and his peers’ ongoing search for the tallest wave on earth.
Award winning filmmaker Chris Smith (Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond, Fyre: The Greatest Party that Never Happened) directs and executive produces under his Library Films banner. He also executive produced the blockbuster doc series Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, which netted six Emmy nominations.
Joe Lewis executive produces via his Amplify Pictures shingle. Lewis is co-founder of Amazon Studios and launched Amplify Pictures in 2018. He has executive produced several lauded fictional series, among them the multiple Emmy-winning Fleabag and Transparent.
100 Foot Wave is produced by Topic Studios, Library Films and Amplify Pictures. Executive producing alongside Smith and Lewis are Maria Zuckerman, Ryan Heller and Michael Bloom.
The series will premiere this spring on HBO and be available to stream on HBO Max.
