MIPTV organizers Reed MIDEM are set to honor cable group A+E Networks and its president, Paul Buccieri, with its MIP SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Award during its upcoming edition in April.
Reed MIDEM, a member of the SDG Media Compact, launched its annual MIP SDG Award last year to honor media companies for their action and contribution to delivering the Sustainable Development Goals as set out by the United Nations and its Decade of Action for Sustainable Development Goals program.
This year, the goal in focus is “reduced inequalities.” A+E and its president are therefore being honored, according to the MIP organizers, for their “long-standing commitment to reducing inequality, promoting diversity and inclusion and fearlessly bringing controversial topics to the table like sexism, racism, [and] violence against women through a wide range of actions that encompass its programming, internal policies, hiring decisions and corporate outreach initiatives.”
Those initiatives include the Broad Focus program, established to provide women with more opportunities to write, develop, produce and direct for the Lifetime network. The net now exceeds industry averages with 82% of writers, 78% of directors and 67% of producers being women.
Also, in the summer of 2020, A+E Networks unveiled the Voices Magnified initiative, a cross-platform campaign designed to amplify the voices of those making impactful societal changes in their communities.
The award will be presented to Buccieri on April 15 via an online event that will include appearances from various stars from the A+E Networks roster, as well as the UN’s Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, Melissa Fleming.
“Our company has a long-standing history of working towards positive change, and we believe firmly and passionately in using our platforms for purpose,” said the A+E president in a statement. “There is more work to be done, and we are honored to continue to join with our partners to achieve these goals.”
The upcoming virtual edition of MIPTV, billed as Digital MIPTV, takes place from April 12-16.
