Smart Dog Media founder and The Masked Singer executive producer Craig Plestis has struck a partnership with Tokyo Broadcasting System Television to co-develop programming for global audiences.
The deal, intended to capitalize on the growing global appetite for Asian formats, marks the first of its kind for Tokyo Broadcasting System Television.
Unscripted veteran Plestis brought The Masked Singer, based on the Korean format King of Mask Singer which airs there on MBC, to North America via Fox. It has since become a global juggernaut. Plestis is also behind Fox’s Masked Dancer and the U.S. version of the CJ ENM format I Can See Your Voice, both also airing on Fox.
Tokyo Broadcasting System Television, meanwhile, is behind such programming as Ninja Warrior, Takeshi’s Castle, America’s Funniest Home Videos, Happy Family Plan, and Alternative Love.
“This is a match made in heaven,” said Plestis in a statement. “I’m so excited to be working with Tokyo Broadcasting System Television and joining forces to create entertaining content for audiences around the world.”
“The collaboration with Craig Plestis and Smart Dog Media is a new frontier for TBS as we look to create content for a global audience,” added Junko Abe, Tokyo Broadcasting System’s division president of media business.
Craig Plestis is represented by Paradigm. Tokyo Broadcasting System Television was assisted in the deal by Bellon Entertainment.
