MTV International is creating a UK version of its series Catfish: The TV Show. Catfish UK will initially roll out as a 4 x 60-minute series, with six additional hours being added later in the year.
Produced by ViacomCBS International Studios UK, this is the first international version of the format, which follows the real-life stories of individuals in online relationships with partners they’ve never met in person.
The series is co-hosted by radio/TV presenter Julie Adenuga and writer/filmmaker Oobah Butler. The hosts will help facilitate face-to-face meetings, capturing all the action as love-struck hopefuls meet for the very first time.
“We are so excited to launch Catfish UK and have been blown away by the incredible stories we’re hearing of online love and deception,” said Orr, VP of original content and development, ViacomCBS Networks International Youth & Entertainment Brands, in a statement. “Julie and Oobah make the ultimate truth seeking dynamic duo, and bring a freshness to the format that I believe our audiences will love.”
Added Butler: “It’s wild to me that the person who learned about the Internet and deception by watching Catfish with his five brothers and sisters gets to be a part of its latest chapter. We live in a moment where everybody’s lives have moved online. I can’t wait to travel around the country, meet people, and use the tools I’ve developed making documentaries, to help them and better understand what it is about society that drives people to feel so inadequate that they cannot be themselves.”
