Cardiff-based indie Wildflame Productions has been commissioned to produce Wonderful Wales with Michael Ball for UK pubcaster Channel 5.
The four-part series finds the famous singer returning home to Wales where his mother was born, and his grandfather was a coal miner — exploring the history, traditions and treasures, cultural heritage and Celtic pride, language and landscape of the region. Ball will also be performing with a choir at the end of every episode with the Welsh landscape as a backdrop.
This commission builds on Wildflame’s expanding relationship with Channel 5, following news that the broadcaster boarded the company’s international special Yellowstone: Super Volcanoes, Wildflame’s first commission for Discovery+. Wildflame is also known for historical, landscape and talent-led series including: the Grierson nominated 1900 Island for BBC Two; The Story of Welsh Art for BBC Two Wales and BBC Four; Carol Vorderman: Closer to Home for BBC One Wales; and Katherine Jenkins: Home For Christmas for BBC One.
“Thanks to our strong existing relationships, we have special access to a wealth of Welsh institutions, landmarks and heritage sites which are perfect for this series,” Llinos Griffin-Williams, executive producer, factual & international coproductions for Wildflame, said in a statement. “We’re proud to be bringing together a diverse, all-Welsh production team for this series and are very excited to be working with Michael.”
Wonderful Wales with Michael Ball was commissioned by Adrian Padmore for Channel 5. The exec producer for Wildflame Productions is Llinos Griffin-Williams and the series will be produced and directed by Carrie Smith.
