Realscreen is partnering with filmmaker and executive producer Chuck Braverman and his Westdoc Online video series to bring his interviews with acclaimed documentarians and non-fiction content industry figures to its readership.

This episode features director and producer Billie Mintz (The Guardians, Jesus Town USA), discussing his latest project, Portrayal (pictured). The film, airing on the CBC’s documentary channel in Canada, follows the efforts of a man investigating a dark secret from his family’s past involving a wealth of missing artwork painted by his grandfather over the course of his lifetime.

Here, Mintz discusses how he came upon the story and navigated the challenges of crafting a documentary that plays like a thriller, as well as his route to filmmaking and his thoughts on why creativity should be valued over technology when it comes to doc-making.
