ESPN Films and Vice Studios are working together on a new docuseries for the network’s ’30 for 30′ strand about TV sensation American Gladiators, the reality competition show that dominated ariwaves from 1989 to 1996.
The untitled project, to be directed by Ben Berman (The Amazing Jonathan Documentary), will feature many of the larger-than-life former Gladiators, as well as producer Johnny Ferraro.
Executive producers for Vice Studios (Flee, Fyre: The Greatest Party that Never Happened), the global production and distribution arm of Vice Media Group, are Danny Gabai, Jannat Gargi and Andrew Freston.
Since its inception in March 2008, ESPN Films has produced more than 100 documentaries including the Oscar-winning O.J.: Made in America and The Last Dance.
Vice Studios’ upcoming original productions include the six-part docuseries Pride for FX and Moments Like This Never Last, which premiered at DOCNYC.
Launched in 2017, the studio’s productions include Chris Smith’s Emmy-nominated Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond; Dark Side of the Ring (Vice TV); AKA Jane Roe (FX); and Satanic Verses (BBC).
