Another former unscripted television personality is entering the political arena.
Caitlyn Jenner, former Olympian and star of both the Keeping Up with the Kardashians series and her own series, I Am Cait, has announced via her personal website and social media accounts that she has filed the initial paperwork to run for governor of California in a recall election.
Saying that a formal announcement will be made in the coming weeks, her announcement decries current California governor Gavin Newsom’s time in office, calling it “disastrous” and railing against what she refers to as “the over-restrictive lockdown” imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jenner, a longtime Republican, is looking to unseat the current Democratic governor in a recall election bid that has three other Republican candidates looking to take the candidacy. While not a done deal, a recall election is looking “increasingly likely” after efforts began last June.
I Am Cait, produced by Keeping Up with the Kardashians prodco Bunim/Murray Productions, ran for two seasons on E!, from 2015-2016. The series followed Jenner as she emerged from the media storm that followed her interview with Diane Sawyer for ABC’s 20/20 in which she first discussed her life as a transgender woman.
