Modern Films picks up Lady Boss: The Jackie Collins Story for distribution

Lady Boss: The Jackie Collins Story will be distributed by Modern Films, the production company announced on Monday (May 17).

Modern acquired the documentary, which is directed by Laura Fairrie and produced by John Battsek. The film follows the life and work of Collins (pictured), a prolific author who sold more than 500 million copies of her work, and who became a feminist icon in the 1980s. The British-American millionaire actress had a turbulent life and success story that often inspired her hit novels.

The film was also produced by Passion Pictures, AGC Studios, CNN Films and BBC Arts.

Modern Films acquired Lady Boss from AGC International. Modern is now working closely on the film with publicity agency MILK Publicity, Collins’ estate and her publisher Simon & Schuster.

Kelly Wray, a longtime veteran of unscripted TV work, has been hired by McGillivray Entertainment Media (MEM) as an executive producer.

Wray has worked in lifestyle, factual, documentary, reality and children’s TV for more than 15 years. As executive producer, Wray will oversee MEM’s slate of lifestyle series including Scott’s Vacation House Rules.

“Kelly’s combination of creative vision and proven track record of delivering engaging content to broadcast partners, makes her a perfect addition to our growing company,” said Angela Jennings, MEM president.

McGillivray called Wray one of Canada’s top showrunners on Monday, citing a career where Wray has overseen projects for broadcasters including the CBC, BBC, Discovery, Bravo and HGTV. Her work includes The Wilkinsons, Reality Obsessed, Income Property, and an Emmy nomination for Save Our Shelter.

Abacus to distribute The Masked Dancer UK internationally

New unscripted entertainment series, The Masked Dancer UK, will be distributed outside the United Kingdom by Abacus Media Rights (AMR).

AMR, a member of the Amcomri Media Group, announced on Monday (May 17), that it had secured international distribution rights for the new series. The Masked Dancer UK, available as of this spring, will be produced by Bandicoot Scotland, part of the Argonon group. The series is hosted by Joel Dommett with panelists including renowned dancer Oti Mabuse, broadcaster Jonathan Ross, TV presenter Davina McCall and stand-up comedian Mo Gilligan.

The series is a spin-off of The Masked Singer, and features mystery celebrities dancing while covered head-to-toe in elaborate costumes, leaving the audience and panelists to guess their identities. The Masked Singer UK is a format originally imported from South Korea with local versions already airing in 30 territories.

AMR has already sold the series to Virgin in Ireland, Game TV in Canada, BBC BRIT in South Africa and Stöð 2 in Iceland.
