On the heels of the Discovery+ series Chasing Ocean Giants, filmmaker James Reed – co-director of the Oscar-winning documentary My Octopus Teacher — and his Underdog Films are once again partnering with Plimsoll Productions for a project with ocean explorer, adventurer and filmmaker Patrick Dykstra.

The untitled project will see Dykstra (pictured), who searched for large and elusive creatures in Chasing Ocean Giants, embark on another series of missions — including seeking out Narwhals and coming face to face with a 2,000 lb. male walrus.

Dykstra is also going in search of a distinct population of Southern Right Whales, who live 300 miles out to sea in the sub-Antarctic. He’ll additionally be chasing spinner dolphins, to discover why these animals gather in huge numbers off the Central America coast.

Andrew Jackson, president of Plimsoll International, is leading the search for program funding for the new project.

“I’m so excited to be part of Patrick’s next adventures. He’s an incredible force. When Patrick sets his mind to something, he does it. And this series of missions is going to be more exciting, and deliver more never-seen-before footage than anything he’s ever done before,” Reed said in a statement.

“We’re delighted to be working with Patrick again, and on the back of his Discovery+ series, feel confident we’ll find the right partners to make this an even better TV experience. Patrick is the real deal. He’s going, and we want to go with him. He has an unbelievable ability to be in the right place at the right time. His vision and understanding of animals, as well as the technical knowhow to film them, is an exceptional and intriguing package,” Jackson added.

Bristol-, Cardiff- and LA-based Plimsoll Productions recently produced Malika The Lion Queen for Fox, the network’s first foray into natural history. Its other credits include Tiny World for Apple TV+, John Bishop’s Great Whale Rescue for ITV and Handmade: Britain’s Best Woodworker for Channel 4, to name a few.

Reed launched Underdog Films in 2015 to produce his film Jago — A Life Underwater. In addition to My Octopus Teacher, which he co-directed with Pippa Elrich, Reed also collaborated with Keo Films on Rise of the Warrior Apes.
