Documentaries about the U.S. opioid crisis, a concentration camp survivor helping refugees make their way to Israel and the latest film from award-winning producer Julie Goldman are among the international inclusions in the 23rd edition of the Tel Aviv-Yafo documentary film festival Docaviv.

The full lineup for the festival, which runs from July 1-10, includes a total of 116 documentaries, with 28 Israeli films and three international docs receiving their world premieres. The festival’s Israeli lineup was unveiled last month. The event will also feature Q&As with local and international filmmakers, and retrospectives held across the city. This year’s festival will be a hybrid of live and online events, featuring live screenings and a geo-blocked online program.

A Jewish Life (pictured) from Austrian filmmakers Christian Krönes, Florian Weigensamer, Roland Schrotthofer and Christian Kermer, about a man who survived four concentration camps and helped refugees reach Israel, will have its world premiere at Docaviv, as will Dayton Diaries from Shimon Dotan, about an American city ravaged by opioid addiction.

The festival opens on July 1 with Queen Shoshana from filmmakers Kobi Farag and Morris Ben-Mayor, about Shoshana Damari, the first Israeli diva. The film is also part of the Israeli Competition.

The 2021 festival will also feature special guests including Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning producer Julie Goldman, whose latest film, the 2021 Sundance selection In the Same Breath, will also be in this year’s International Competition; acclaimed Italian director Gianfranco Rosi along with his producer Donatella Palermo; and Kurdish filmmaker Hogir Hirori, who returns to Docaviv for a second time with his new film Sabuya, which won the World Documentary Directing Award at Sundance, which will also be screened. All three special guests will lead masterclass sessions at the festival.

“This year’s festival comes at a troubled time, a time of conflict and the aftermath of violence,” said Karin Rywkind Segal, artistic director of Docaviv in a release. “This is why this year’s program, and the voices and stories it amplifies, reflect the times — by showing protests and calls for change, struggles for freedom of speech, basic liberties, and human rights, the relations between humans and nature, and the need to save the only planet we have. We want to look at our history and our present and use the power of film to create dialog and provoke thought on a variety of burning issues.”
