BBC2 has announced a new documentary film about colorism featuring Queer Eye star Tan France.
France (pictured) will work with Cardiff Production on the one-hour film Beauty and the Bleach (w/t) for BBC2 and BBC iPlayer. France will explore issues around skin tone and colorism in society, as well as in the fashion, entertainment and beauty industries.
France will face up to his own experiences to answer questions about the public perception of beauty. Celebrities, experts and other people affected by the issue will speak with France for the film. One of France’s experiences with this issue himself came when he tried to lighten his skin with bleaching cream when he was nine years old.
“I know that sadly my story isn’t unique, and so many people around the world have felt a burning desire to lighten their skin. But now is the time to question that,” France said in a BBC2 news release. “I want to find out why colourism is still so prevalent, and why people feel the need to change their skin colour when it’s already beautiful.”
The film is executive produced by Narinder Minhas, directed by Ashok Prasad and produced by Sian Guerra.
