First Look Media’s streaming service Topic has acquired the North American rights to Nora Mandray and Jason B. Kohl’s Eli: A Dog in Prison.

Eli is a Labrador puppy who turns three convicted felons’ world upside down when he arrives at their prison cell. Eli: A Dog in Prison follows the three prisoners, who form an unlikely bond as they struggle to transform Eli into a highly disciplined guide dog in just twelve months, all while charting their own path to rehabilitation in the American prison system.

The documentary will have its world premiere Aug. 12 on Vimeo On-Demand, and will be available to stream on Topic Aug. 26.

Jennifer Liang, VP of acquisitions at Topic, negotiated the deal with The Film Sales Company, which is handling international sales.

The film is executive produced by Sophie Robinson, director of Netflix’s My Beautiful Broken Brain.

“We are excited to share this intimate story of redemption in the unlikeliest of places,” Kohl said in a statement. “We hope it will encourage audiences to show more compassion to the people trapped inside of our justice system, and to reconsider the harshness of their sentences.”
