First Look Media has promoted Maria Zuckerman to president of Topic Studios.

Zuckerman (pictured), previously EVP and head of the studio, will continue to lead creative vision and overall strategy, including development, financing and production across feature films, documentaries, TV and podcasts.

She will report to First Look Media CEO Michael Bloom.

Zuckerman joined Topic Studios in May 2019 after nearly 20 years at HBO, where she served as SVP of HBO Films.

Under her leadership, the producer-distributor has expanded with a range of film projects and ramped up its TV division.

In the non-fiction space, the studio’s recent projects have included the docuseries 100 Foot Wave from director Chris Smith for HBO and HBO Max; Douglas Tirola’s Leonard Bernstein documentary portrait Bernstein’s Wall; and Lucy Walker’s Bring Your Own Brigade, debuting in theaters Aug. 6th and on Paramount+ and CBSN Aug. 20.

Zuckerman also oversaw accelerated growth of Topic Studios’ podcast unit.

She further led efforts to grow creative partnerships, including setting a first-look deal across all media with independent producer The Population and inking a partnership with Carly Hugo and Matt Parker’s NY-based Loveless to develop scripted and unscripted projects across film, television and podcasts.

“It has been thrilling over the past two years to grow Topic Studios’ reach and slate of productions. By working with the most exciting creators and partnering with the most dynamic leaders in our industry, we are demonstrating Topic Studios’ unique full-service capabilities across all our formats, playing diverse roles bespoke to each project,” Zuckerman said in a statement.
