When the SpaceXDragon launches four civilians into space for three days this September, Netflix will be along for the ride to launch its own real-time documentary.

Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission To Space will cover the mission, dubbed Inspiration 4, set to take the civilians to an orbit higher than that of  the International Space Station, making it the first all-civilian mission to circle the planet.

The world’s first all-civilian mission, led and commanded by Jared Isaacman, the founder/CEO of Shift4Payments and joined by Hayley Arceneaux, a physician assistant at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; Dr. Sian Proctor, a professor of giosciences who will pilot the mission and Lockheed Martin engineer Chris Sembroski,  will be broadcast in near real-time in pre-and-post-mission launch.

The mission will raise funds and awareness for St. Jude.

Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission To Space will premiere in five parts leading up to and following the mission, with Time Studios, Known, and producer Connor Schell and his Words & Pictures outfit– along with director Jason Hehir and the team behind The Last Dance – taking viewers behind the scenes with the four crew members.

Documenting the four through their unconventional selection and intensive commercial astronaut training over several months through the moments leading up to liftoff, the series will conclude just days after the mission is completed, featuring unprecedented access inside the spacecraft. It will chronicle the crew’s journey into space and their return to Earth.

Hehir serves as director and executive producer. Schell (30 for 30, The Last Dance), Libby Geist (O.J.: Made in America, The Last Dance), and Aaron Cohen serve as executive producers for Words & Pictures while Ian Orefice, Alexa Conway, and Rebecca Gitlitz represent Time Studios as EPs. Ross Martin, Brad Roth, and Mark Feldstein will executive produce for Known.

Jonathan D. Woods (A Year In Space) and Jake Rogal (The Last Dance) also serve as producers.

Prior to the mission, Netflix will air the hybrid-live animation special A StoryBots Space Adventure for family viewing, as the civilian space travelers will help StoryBots answer kids’ most pressing questions.

A StoryBots Space Adventure, produced by Mindshow, is scripted by Erik Weiner and features a Big Freedia original song.

Key premiere dates for Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission To Space include September 6 for Episodes 1-2; September 13 for Episodes 3-4; September 14 for A StoryBots Space Adventure and September 15 for the targeted launch of the mission, with the end of the month being scheduled for the feature-length finale premieres.
