Discovery has announced a lineup of new original non-fiction programming produced exclusively for Discovery+ by OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.
Five new series have been ordered straight to series as part of a strategic partnership between Discovery+ and OWN aimed at increasing the diverse voices and stories on the streaming service.
Among the new series is OWN’s first collaboration with HGTV, the home renovation show Taking Back the House (working title), which will air exclusively on Discovery+. The series follows Broadway star Robert Hartwell as he renovates an 1820 colonial house he just bought. The show is produced by Hartwell and HGTV real estate and home renovation stars Drew Scott and Jonathan Scott (Property Brothers) and will premiere in 2022.
The Great Soul Food Cookoff highlights Black cooks and culinary tradition with challenges designed to highlight the past and present of Black food in America while pitting eight chefs head-to-head. The series is produced by Good Egg Entertainment, (Chopped) with award-winning author, historian and educator Michael W. Twitty serving as culinary historian and consultant.
Burger Truck Brawl follows L.A.’s Billionaire Burger Boyz (and the Burger Girl) as they travel from city to city challenging the top food trucks in America to craft a new menu, with a cash bet put up by both teams on the line. The series is produced by Guy Fieri’s Knuckle Sandwich Productions and Lando Entertainment, and will debut on Discovery+ on August 21.
The new series Like Mother, Like Daughter? focuses on mother-daughter bonds that have become strained, with six pairs moving into an isolated resort where they’re forced to work on their relationship in an intensive three-week experiment. The show comes from Bunim/Murray Productions.
Breaking Black comes from Tina Knowles-Lawson, Trell Thomas and A. Smith & Co. Productions, and showrunner P. Frank Williams. It challenges and debunks negative stereotypes around Black men with the goal of reshaping the narrative and highlighting authentic stories.
“OWN has built its loyal audience through programming that connects with viewers very deeply, and it is that intention that drives the programming we are bringing to Discovery+,” said Tina Perry (pictured), president of OWN in a release. “This slate of new series will incorporate OWN’s unique style in genres that include relationship, docu-series, cooking and the revelatory home renovation series Taking Back The House, which we are producing in an exciting first-time partnership with HGTV, and will appeal to Discovery+ subscribers who are as varied and diverse as the programs themselves.”
