UK prodco Nutopia has tapped former National Geographic executive Geoff Daniels to be its new executive vice president of unscripted entertainment.
In the newly-created role, Daniels (pictured) will oversee and work across all series in production, manage marketing and also help liaise with the company’s key production partners and talent. The role will be based in the U.S. and Daniels will report to Nutopia founder and CEO Jane Root.
A veteran of the non-fiction industry, Daniels was previously Nat Geo’s executive vice president of global unscripted entertainment, a role that saw him managing all development and production for the National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo Wild and Nat Geo on Disney+.
He left the company in December as part of a round of layoffs within Disney’s General Entertainment Content and Walt Disney TV units.
While at Nat Geo Daniels also commissioned the popular Nutopia series The World According to Jeff Goldblum and the upcoming Limitless with Chris Hemsworth for the streamer. Prior to that he helped launch and lead the Nat Geo Wild brand. Since joining Nat Geo in 1998, Daniels commissioned more than 250 hours of original programming per year and executive produced nearly 400 hours of factual programming.
“With our ever-growing slate of productions, we are delighted to welcome Geoff as we expand our senior team,” said Root in a release. “From working with him over the last few years, I know that he has the vision, extraordinary experience and great working relationships in the industry to continue our successes into the future.”
Added Daniels: “When it comes to delivering brand defining, breakthrough content that entertains and inspires mass audiences around the world, Nutopia is the gold standard. I simply couldn’t be more thrilled to have this opportunity to work alongside such an innovative team of creators under a leader as visionary as Jane.”
