A documentary about decorated U.S. gymnast, advocate and abuse survivor Aly Raisman will premiere on Lifetime on September 24.
Aly Raisman: Darkness to Light is a three-hour documentary special designed to raise awareness about sexual abuse across all ages and backgrounds while supporting survivors. The special follows Raisman as she meets with individuals who have suffered abuse and discusses their trauma while sharing her story.
Raisman, a gold medalist and world champion gymnast, came forward to address her abuser, the former team doctor for the U.S. gymnastics program, in a Michigan courtroom in 2018, rallying other survivors to also demand justice and accountability.
Aly Raisman: Darkness to Light also explores one of the largest child sexual abuse cases in America, in which a community pediatrician abused generations of children and showcases the aftermath for the survivors in Johnstown, PA. The doc also follows a male survivor of the Ohio State abuse scandal, and details how disabled and transgender communities are often specifically targeted for abuse.
The special additionally features an exclusive conversation with MeToo founder Tarana Burke, detailed information from experts from RAINN (Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network) and the nonprofit Darkness to Light, which has the mandate of empowering adults to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The special will close with a roundtable discussion with experts and advocates on how to help prevent child sexual abuse and provide tools on how to move forward.
The special is supported by Lifetime’s Stop Violence Against Women campaign, which brings together a coalition of nonprofit groups to provide resources. Helpline information for RAINN’s National Assault Hotline and the Suicide Prevention Lifeline will also be shared throughout the airing.
“Aly Raisman continues to be a true champion as she uses her platform to address widespread abuse, elevate voices of survivors from all walks of life, and provide an opportunity for survivors and experts to come together to talk about how to heal,” said Amy Winter, executive vice president and head of programming for Lifetime and LMN, in a release. “Lifetime is proud to partner with Aly on this special which we believe will create meaningful conversation and provide very real takeaway to raise awareness and help those out there grappling with abuse.”
Aly Raisman: Darkness to Light is executive produced by Aly Raisman; Steven Ascher, Kristy Sabat and Patty Ivins Specht for Six West Media group; Kyell Thomas, Emily Hejlik, and Peter Carlisle for Octagon; and Amy Winter and Shura Davison for Lifetime.
