Talpa Concepts, Blue Engine team in MENA region

John de Mol’s Talpa Concepts is joining forces with Blue Engine Studios to launch formats from Talpa’s catalogue in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region, with an eye towards the expanding OTT market there.

The deal sees Blue Engine Studios gain exclusive access to de Mol’s format catalogue, with titles like Avastars, Hit the Road, Marble Mania and others.

Talpa has already announced exclusive partnerships in Belgium, Germany, France and Australia. The Middle Eastern and North African market consolidates more than 15 territories, with the largest media markets being Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Morocco.

“We’re excited to bring to the MENA region a new generation of premium content  formats designed to win the eyeballs, capture the hearts and minds of Arab audiences,” said Ziad Kebbi, co-founder of Blue Engine Studios in a release. “Partnering with Talpa Concepts can only bring tremendous added-value to the market and its audiences.”

Added John de Mol, founder of Talpa Concepts: “Clearly, the Arab media landscape is witnessing positive changes and a rapid expansion. Together with Blue Engine Studios, we’ll launch locally produced and culturally relevant compelling shows, up to international standards. I have been working with Ziad Kebbi for many years and look forward to renewing the cooperation.”

Quintus Studios sells Behind Bars internationally

Berlin-based distributor and channel owner Quintus Studios has announced a raft of sales for the prison docuseries Behind Bars: The World’s Toughest Prisons (pictured).

The series, from German factual prodco Maximus Film, immerses viewers in the day-to-day life inside six of the world’s toughest prisons. Pre-sales for season three (6 x 60 minutes), which features some of the world’s most notorious detention facilities including Ukraine’s Zhytomyr Prison, Jefferson City Correctional institution and Maafushi Prison in the Maldives, have been made to Discovery Latin America, Discovery Iberia, Bell Media in Canada and WELT Germany.

Meanwhile, SBS VICELAND in Australia (brokered by Parade Media) and AMC Networks International – Central and Northern Europe for Spektrum in Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have acquired all three seasons of the series.

“The global success of Behind Bars: The World’s Toughest Prisons showcases the ever-growing demand for content in the crime genre, demonstrated not only by our global sales but also the views and engagement on our own AVOD channel. We’re delighted to collaborate with Maximus Film, Discovery and WELT together with our own Free Documentary digital channel to bring more top quality factual content to a global audience,” said Anouk van Dijk, head of sales & co-productions at Quintus Studios, in a release.
