Veteran factual programming executive producer and former head of factual programs at Granada Television Rod Caird has died at the age of 73.

According to UK trade Broadcast, which first reported the news, Caird passed unexpectedly after complications from routine surgery.

Caird served as head of factual programs at Northern England broadcaster Granada Television from 1977 to 1993, having established himself there as a producer and editor of evening news program Granada Reports, and head of regional programs.

In the latter days of his tenure at Granada, Caird shepherded an international co-production that would air in multiple territories including the U.S. via A&E, 1991′s Dinosaur!

Following Granada, Caird moved into the independent production sphere, serving as a managing director at London-based Satel Doc and as an executive producer at Principal Media, where he continued to develop and executive produce a variety of international co-pros. In 2000, he moved into a consultancy role with A+E Networks, working with the company’s channel partners outside of the U.S. to acquire, pre-buy or co-produce content. He continued his consultancy work with the network group until 2010, when he established Rod Caird Associates and continued to originate, fund, and supervise international and domestic factual productions.

His expertise was also called upon by UK producers advocacy organization Pact, where he served as a consultant from 2012 to 2017. There, he arranged and chaired webinars with U.S. and UK broadcasters, and helped Pact member companies prepare for market attendance, while also assisting with visits from prodcos outside of the UK.

“Rod was such a wonderful person, kind and selfless,” said Dawn McCarthy-Simpson MBE, managing director of business and global strategy at Pact, in a statement supplied to Realscreen. “He was the face of Pact’s webinars for many years and our members had so much respect for him. For more than five years Rod worked with me providing support for Pact’s international activities, which included Realscreen Summit. He always had a smile on his face and was very much part of the extended Pact family. He will be missed by everyone at Pact.”

Paul Heaney, chief executive officer at UK-headquartered content creation, distribution and funding firm BossaNova, told Realscreen: “I didn’t know Rod half as well as most but when we did work together he was so congenial and generally lovely company, but a consummate professional. He was effortlessly charming and amusing and made everything that he did look easy, which it wasn’t.”

Rod Caird was pre-deceased by his wife, Sue Hayes. The former Film London commissioner, producer and director of the Edinburgh International Television Festival, passed away in April of this year.

He is survived by sons Charlie, Jack and Luke.
