Global producer-distributor Fremantle has announced details for an upcoming documentary, Stonehenge: The Hidden Truth, which details research that has identified a new monument at Stonehenge.

The film, produced by Fremantle-backed prodco Wild Blue Media, was commissioned to continue research at the site, and that research went on to uncover a previously undiscovered subterranean ring.

Stonehenge: The Hidden Truth features live archaeology as experts piece together evidence to reveal a giant ring of prehistoric “shafts” known as the Durrington Pits, which are 20 times the size of Stonehenge and were created over 4,000 years ago, discovered just a few miles away from Stonehenge. Until now, they had been completely hidden from sight. The film also provides insight from Stonehenge expert and archaeologist Susan Greaney on how and why the Neolithic people may have created the monument and how the new discovery is redefining historians’ previous hypotheses.

The documentary was produced by Wild Blue Media for Science Channel and Channel 5 in the UK. It’s produced and directed by Kate Dooley and executive produced by Cameron Balbirnie and Gary Hunter. It has also been pre-sold to SBS Australia. Fremantle maintains international distribution rights.

“The scale of what has been discovered is extraordinary — we are immensely proud to be attached to this show that has changed the story of Stonehenge,” said Céire Clark, senior acquisitions manager for Fremantle International, in a release.

Added Balbirnie, executive producer at Wild Blue Media: “Having been a part of major discoveries from the Arctic to the Amazon, it’s been such a privilege to partner with such fantastic scientists and archaeologists on such an extraordinary story right here in Britain.”
