Historian and author Charles Moore, who wrote the authorized biography of Margaret Thatcher, will discuss his view of how the relationship between the former UK prime minister and U.S. president Ronald Reagan changed world history in a two-part series for BBC2 and BBC iPlayer.

Thatcher And Reagan: The Special Relationship (w/t) is produced by Plimsoll Productions and will examine the close friendship between the two leaders, built on ideological affinity and strong rapport. The series was commissioned by Patrick Holland and Clare Sillery, head of commissioning, documentaries, history & religion. Series producer for Plimsoll is Chris Durlacher, with executive producers Richard Klein and Denys Blakeway. The BBC commissioning editor is Simon Young.

Moore (pictured) will make the case that the relationship between Thatcher and Reagan fundamentally shifted the power dynamics of the 1980s as the pair helped reshape East/West relations, driving the Cold War towards a turning point ahead of the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union.

Formerly a journalist covering the story on a daily basis, Moore has since dedicated years to his Thatcher biographies and is one of the few people in the UK who has read the former prime minister’s secret and personal papers, as well as the relevant U.S. government documents.

“The status of the ‘special relationship’ has been a constant in post-war political analysis. This series promises to be a fascinating and timely exploration of Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan’s chapter in this history, when the relationship was at the center of such seismic shifts in the global order,” said Holland in a statement.

“As Thatcher’s biographer, Charles Moore is perfectly placed to share his take on the dynamic between these two world leaders, exploring how they learnt from each other as they sought to change their worlds.”
