Shaquille O’Neal boards The Queen of Basketball doc short as EP

NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has come aboard Oscar-contending short documentary The Queen of Basketball as an executive producer.

The film tells the story of Lusia Harris, the only woman drafted to the NBA. Harris won three national titles with the small Mississippi college Delta State and scored the first basket in women’s Olympic history in 1976. In 1992, Harris became one of the first two women inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

The film aims to inspire young female basketball players, and spark conversations about mental health and athletics.

O’Neal is a four-time NBA champion, former NBA MVP, a three-time NBA Finals MVP, an Olympic gold medalist and an inductee into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

“Lusia ‘Lucy’ Harris’ heroism has gone unsung for way too long and I am particularly proud of my involvement in bringing her story to bear,” O’Neal said in a news release. “A living legend and a pioneer in both men’s and women’s basketball, her life is a significant example of fortitude that is sure to inspire.”

The film is directed by Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker Ben Proudfoot (A Concerto is a Conversation) and produced by Breakwater Studios for The New York Times Op-Docs. The Queen of Basketball premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, and was named best documentary short at the 2021 Palm Springs International ShortFest, which qualified it for contention at the upcoming Academy Awards.

The Queen of Basketball also recently won the 2021 Critics Choice Documentary Award for best documentary short, and was included on DOC NYC’s Short List: Shorts program of short documentaries the festival considers to be leading awards season contenders.

HGTV sets Married to Real Estatepremiere date

HGTV has slated the premiere date for its upcoming series Married to Real Estate, starring real estate broker and designer Egypt Sherrod and her husband, builder Mike Jackson.

The previously announced series, produced by 51 Minds Entertainment, will debut on HGTV on January 13 at 9 p.m. ET/PT and will also be available to stream on Discovery+ and HGTV GO.

The eight-episode series finds Sherrod and Jackson combining their talents to help families find the perfect homes in their ideal neighborhoods. Sherrod uses her knowledge of the housing market, financial prowess and design sensibilities — honed on the HGTV series Property Virgins and Flipping Virgins — to find affordable houses in Atlanta, while Jackson and his team will renovate the properties to increase their value and return on investment.

“I’m obsessed with real estate and helping people find their perfect home,” said Sherrod in a statement. “Mike and I find families a house in the right neighborhood and renovate it into their dream home — with the goal that they move in with equity in their new place. We aim to over-deliver for our clients.”
