BBC Factual commissioning editor Emily Smith is joining London-headquartered production company Wall to Wall as its creative director, effective March 2022, the company announced on Thursday (Dec. 9).

In her new role, Smith’s focus will be to develop and deliver factual formats and large-scale factual entertainment series for UK broadcasters and global streamers. She’ll report to managing director and head of Wall to Wall, Leanne Klein.

Patrick Holland, director of factual, arts & classical music for the BBC, praised Smith for being a champion at the public broadcaster for smaller indies and producers from diverse backgrounds.

Smith has worked with the BBC since 2018, and has commissioned titles including Glow Up: Britain’s Next Make Up Star from Wall to Wall, Sort Your Life Out, Forensics: The Real CSI, The Grand Party Hotel, Inside the Supermarket, Miriam’s Dead Good Adventure and the upcoming Yorkshire Born. She also oversaw returning formats such as Who Do You Think You Are? from Wall to Wall and The Choir.

Before joining the BBC, Smith directed and produced factual shows such as The Week the Landlords Moved In, Employable Me, One Born Every Minute and An Hour to Save Your Life.

“It’s been a privilege to work with brilliant creatives in BBC Commissioning and the indie world — and to launch and nurture so many different kinds of factual series and singles. But I’ve also missed creating new shows and being closer to production,” Smith said in a statement.

“Having always admired Wall to Wall as setting the gold standard in TV that is both entertaining and enriching, I’m really excited to join the team to build on their rich slate and deliver more successful formats and factual entertainment hits.”

Wall to Wall’s track record in factual entertainment includes titles such as Who Do You Think You Are? and Nadiya’s Fast Flavours for BBC One, Growing Up Animal for Disney+, Long Lost Family for ITV, and Glow Up for BBC Three and Netflix.
