The 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards unveiled their nominations on Tuesday morning (Dec. 12), with several of the top contenders from this year’s awards season populating the best documentary feature category.

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s music documentary Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) and Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s animated documentary Flee each picked up another nomination for best documentary via the Indie Spirit Awards. The other three documentaries nominated are Ascension from director/producer Jessica Kingdon, In the Same Breath from director/producer Nanfu Wang and Procession from director Robert Greene.

Earlier this year, the Academy Award-nominated film Crip Camp received the Independent Spirit Awards’ best documentary feature nod.

The Film Independent Spirit Awards are scheduled to make its in-person return for its 37th annual ceremony in Santa Monica on March 6. Special guest presenters Naomi Watts, Regina Hall and Beanie Feldstein announced the nominees for this year’s awards online on Tuesday.

Indie Spirit Award winners are voted on exclusively by Film Independent members.
