Endemol Shine Germany to produce Masters of Sweet

Endemol Shine Germany, a Banijay company, has announced it will produce a new food-focused competition format, Masters of Sweet (pictured), for Germany’s RTL.

The 4 x 90-minute competition series will air in the country later this year. Banijay Rights will distribute the show internationally.

Masters of Sweet pits six professional pâtissier teams against each other to create sculptures from sugar, cake, ice cream and chocolate in challenges ranging from crafting gigantic creations more than a meter high to fashion-based confections. In each episode, a panel of judges will decide which team is sent home, with the eventual winning team walking away with €25,000.

“Adding to Banijay Germany’s impressive slate, Masters of Sweet perfectly combines creativity, delicious food, craftmanship and competition. This new format taps into the global demand we are seeing for expertise-based competition formats that appeal to the whole family, joining MasterChef, Lego Masters, Domino Challenge, Interior Design Masters and Banijay Productions Germany’s Cream of the Crop (Allererste Sahne), which is set to return for a second series,” said James Townley, global head of content development at Banijay in a news release.

BBC Studios licenses Fact or Fake in Germany

BBC Studios has secured its first international format deal for Fact or Fake, the first international sale of the format for BBCS since its launch at Showcase earlier in the year.

The format has been licensed to German broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR), ARD’s free-to-air channel for Bavaria. The series (6 x 45 minutes)for BR, titled Fakt oder Fake, began production last month and will premiere in 2022.

Fact or Fake was created by Sandrats Media Company and originally broadcast on Austria’s ORF 1 and sees celebrities attempt to filter out facts from fake news. Three guest comedians are shown viral videos, social media posts, newspaper headlines and urban legends by the host. After some debate and discussion, they must determine if the clips are fact or fake.

The original version of the format launched in Austria in 2019 and a second series was quickly commissioned. ORF recently confirmed it will be returning for a third series in January 2022.

“Fake news is such a hot topic in recent years and this series demonstrates, in a hilarious and entertaining way, just how difficult it is to separate fact from fiction. I’m sure the German audience will be just as entertained by this unique show as their Austrian neighbors have been,” said André Renaud, senior vice president of global format sales at BBC Studios in a release.
