The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the shortlists for the documentary feature and documentary shorts categories ahead of the 94th Academy Awards.

Fifteen films have been shortlisted for the documentary feature category of the 138 films that were eligible. Another round of voting by the Academy’s Documentary Branch will determine the five nominees in each category.

The shortlisted films include three high-profile music documentaries: Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry and The Velvet Underground.

Also making the shortlist was the animated documentary Flee (pictured), which has been racking up nominations and awards this season. The film is also on the Academy’s shortlist for the international feature film category as Denmark’s submission.

The nominations for the 94th Academy Awards will be announced on February 8, 2022, and the awards show will take place on March 27.
