The Palm Springs International Film Society announced on Monday (Dec. 20) that the awards ceremony for its 2022 film festival will not take place on Jan. 6, as originally planned.

The Film Society said it came to this decision due to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases, and out of “an abundance of caution” to ensure the health and safety of honorees, patrons and staff.

The awards ceremony of the Palm Springs International Film Festival typically welcomes around 2,500 guests and more than 1,000 staff.

The festival’s screening portion will occur from Jan. 7 to 17, 2022. All attendees will be required to show proof of vaccination and wear a mask. For the awards, the Film Society will partner with Entertainment Tonight to celebrate this year’s honorees, with more details to follow.

The Film Society has said that those who purchased tickets for the awards ceremony will be reimbursed, adding that the organization hopes to return to an in-person awards event in 2023.
