The British docudrama Mercy has been picked up for North American distribution by All Channel Films. The L.A.-based company will represent the film on pay and basic cable, streaming and VOD/SVOD, video/DVD and other platforms.

The docudrama examines the growing ecological crisis caused by animal agriculture through the perspective of a pig trapped in the factory farming system.

Mercy marks the directorial debut of Wendy Morgan (pictured), whose prolific, four decade-plus career as an actor for film and television has included roles opposite such notable names as Richard Gere (Yanks), Anthony Hopkins (84 Charing Cross Road), Vanessa Redgrave (Mrs. Lowry and Son), as well as the all-star cast of the 1980 Agatha Christie adaptation The Mirror Crack’d, which included Angela Lansbury, Tony Curtis, Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Kim Novak and Geraldine Chaplin.

In a statement on her page on Film Freeway, Morgan claims that she was moved to step behind the camera for the first time after learning of an investigation of an abattoir near her home. “[I] was so shocked and appalled by all that I saw that the only way I could find to process this was to begin writing about it. And so Mercy was born.”

The docudrama follows Mercy (voiced by Maria Austin), a young pig who witnesses firsthand the cruelties of industrial animal agriculture from the inside of a slaughterhouse. The film also features Mark Wingett (Quadrophenia, EastEnders) as “the Slaughterman,” as well as Annette Badland (Ted Lasso) and Morgan herself.

“One of my goals was to bring Mercy to North American audiences to raise awareness about the film’s disturbing but important subject matter. All Channel Films will definitely help me in achieving this goal,” said Morgan in a statement.
