HBO Max has slated a new docuseries, Take Out with Lisa Ling, which examines different Asian foods and the culinary cultures they come from.

The six-part series will hit the streaming service on January 27, with all episodes immediately available.

Take Out with Lisa Ling will explore various foods and cultures from Asia, featuring cuisines from places as diverse as China, India, Japan and Thailand. Many simply lump “Asian food” into a single category without understanding the very different cultures that birthed their favorite dishes, even as they become as ubiquitous as burgers and pizza. The series will look at how Asian Americans have long been misunderstood and exoticized, even purposefully kept out of history books.

The show sees award-winning journalist Ling, whose own family story began in a Chinese restaurant, traveling from Louisiana to Orange County, exploring beloved foods while also shining a long overdue spotlight on the contributions that Asian Americans have been making to the U.S. since before it was a country.

Take Out with Lisa Ling is executive produced by Ling, Helen Cho and David Shadrack Smith.
