Realscreen is partnering with filmmaker and executive producer Chuck Braverman and his Westdoc Online video series to present his interviews with acclaimed documentarians and non-fiction content industry figures to its readership.

In the newest episode of the series, Braverman chats with Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Joseph Patel about their documentary Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised). The film, which was released last year, covers the six-week Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969, a celebration of Black music and culture that boasted performances from such major acts as Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, and Sly and the Family Stone.

Thompson, the drummer and joint frontman of The Roots, made his directorial debut with this film, which has garnered widespread critical acclaim. Summer of Soul has been shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Documentary, won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, and has received honors from critics associations across the U.S.

Patel is a producer on the film, and has also produced titles such as The Vice Guide to Everything and Contact High: A Visual History of Hip Hop.
