The Westdoc Online video interview series celebrates a major milestone today, as it releases its 100th episode.

The ongoing series, a partnership between Realscreen and filmmaker and executive producer Chuck Braverman, features Braverman’s discussions with acclaimed documentarians and non-fiction content industry figures.

The 100th episode of Westdoc fittingly sets its sights on a new documentary feature that delves into the decision to participate in a documentary in the first place.

Braverman is joined in the newest Westdoc video by Jennifer Tiexiera and Camilla Hall, co-directors of Subject, which made its world premiere on Saturday at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film explores the experience of sharing one’s life on screen by speaking with the participants from five acclaimed documentaries —¬†The Staircase, Hoop Dreams, The Wolfpack, Capturing the Friedmans and The Square — and delving into the good, bad and complicated effects that experience had for them.

“As filmmakers, we have both seen the participants of our past films struggle through some of the darkest moments in their lives, and we have found ourselves often challenged and conflicted as to how best we can support them,”¬†said Tiexiera and Hall in a joint statement on their new film.

“The idea for Subject was born when we found ourselves asking the question: is our drive to tell stories overriding our ability to put those we are filming first? We realized a critical need for a better understanding of what it is like to be on the other side of the lens — to feel like you are not in control of your narrative, or to see others achieve fame, profit, or otherwise benefit from your story.”
