Bristol-based indie factual prodco Humble Bee Films has announced the appointment of Richard Thomson to the position of executive chair.

Thomson (pictured) is the former managing director at Wall to Wall, and has also previously held senior management roles at Tiger Aspect, Endemol and Optomen Television. He joins Humble Bee after working with the business for two years on a freelance basis as a non-executive director.

“We have been working with Richard for a couple of years in a non-exec capacity, and the company has benefited from his broad experience, particularly as we ventured into the world of streamers,” Humble Bee CEO Stephen Dunleavy said in a release. “We are delighted he has agreed to be with us on a more permanent basis as we continue to grow and diversify the company.”

Humble Bee Films was launched in 2010 by Dunleavy, a former BBC Natural History Unit producer. Its productions include Attenborough’s Life in Colour for the BBC, Netflix and Channel Nine Australia; David Attenborough’s Natural Curiosities for UKTV, BBC Worldwide and BBC Two; and Attenborough and the Giant Elephant for BBC One and CBC, among others. The company’s recent Netflix commission Wild Babies, narrated by Helena Bonham Carter, just launched globally on the service.
