London-based indie Curious Films has been commissioned to produce a feature-length documentary for Netflix about legendary software pioneer John McAfee.

Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee will tell the story of McAfee’s often controversial life up to his death in 2021. Described as “the original computer genius gone rogue,” McAfee invented one of the most successful — and most hated — pieces of software, McAfee Anti-Virus, which endowed him with a net worth of $100 million at his peak. Resigning from the company he founded in 1994 and relocating to Belize, McAfee eventually came under government suspicion for drug manufacturing, resulting in a police raid on his compound in 2012.

When a neighbor of McAfee’s was murdered later that year, the former tech tycoon went on the run, claiming that armed gunmen sent by the Belizean government were trying to kill him. Inviting a film crew along with him, McAfee took off into the rainforests of Belize, across international borders, up river through the jungles of Guatemala and on to the Bahamas on a boat loaded with guns, drugs and alcohol, trying to stay ahead of his alleged pursuers.

Eventually arrested in Spain in 2020 on charges of tax evasion, McAfee was found dead in his prison cell hours after a Spanish court ordered his extradition to the U.S. His death, which was ruled a suicide, sparked speculation and conspiracy theories that he was possibly murdered, despite the findings of the official autopsy.

With exclusive access to hundreds of hours of previously unseen footage of McAfee and in-depth accounts from the people who knew him, Running with the Devil is billed as the definitive story of a truly larger-than-life character, who twice ran for the U.S. presidency on the Libertarian Party ticket, escaped from jail multiple times, and claimed to have “hacked the world.”

“It’s a stranger-than-fiction story like no other, about a powerful man who lived his real life like it was a high-octane Hollywood movie — and the consequences this has for those closest to him,” said Curious Films co-founder Dov Freedman, who serves as executive producer on the film.

Directed by Freedman’s fellow Curious Films founder Charlie Russell, Running with the Devil: The Wild World of John McAfee is the prodco’s first project for Netflix. The film’s subject was previously profiled in another documentary, 2016′s Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee, which aired on Showtime.
